Irritable Bowel Syndrome Clinical Trials
No irritable bowel study is enrolling in Columbia SC, and we would rather say so plainly. However, one runs about 90 minutes north in Charlotte, and it is aimed at the pain itself. Compensation is provided for eligible participants once one opens here.

New here? Read how this page works
First, here is the honest picture. Nothing is open in the Midlands, and the nearest study is about 90 minutes north. So here is how to use this page.
- Find out which type you are. Because the drugs work in opposite directions, and the study here takes only the diarrhoea type and the mixed type.
- Ask for a faecal calprotectin and a celiac blood test. Notably, you must still be eating gluten when the celiac test is taken, or it can read falsely negative.
- Ask whether you have any alarm features. In fact, bleeding, weight loss, anaemia or symptoms that wake you at night change the plan entirely.
- Finally, tap the button. Then we check you against every study we track and tell you when a new one opens.
Of course, checking never signs you up for anything. You are only seeing where you might fit.

Aimed at the Pain, Not the Bowel Habit
GlaxoSmithKline / Mid stage study
Nearly every drug for this works on how fast things move or how much fluid there is. However, this one targets the nerve signals that carry pain. So it is aimed at the ache rather than at the trips to the bathroom. It takes people with the diarrhoea type and the mixed type. Notably, how the drug is taken is not published on the public record.
Payment is not published.

Why researchers are excited: pain is the symptom people rank as worst, and almost nothing on the market treats it directly. Also, this drug family is already used for a stubborn cough, so there is real safety history behind it.
Who this study is looking for
- Age 18 to 80, with the diarrhoea type or the mixed type
- Also, diagnosed by the Rome criteria, and moderate or severe on the symptom score
- Besides that, weekly pain of at least 4 out of 10, every week of the run in
- Finally, A stool pattern that matches your type every week of the run in
Probably not a fit if: the constipation type does not qualify at all. Also, a high score on the mood questionnaire rules you out, which catches many people. Notably, having used more than two of the six drug classes excludes you.
- Placebo group: Yes. Several dose levels are tested against a dummy, and the split is not published.
- How long: 26 weeks of treatment, in two parts. So expect roughly seven to eight months in total.
- Clinic visits: Not published on the public record.
- Phone calls: Not published on the public record.
- Most invasive part: A daily pain diary for about seven months. However, no camera test is required.
- Setting: Outpatient.
- Where it runs: GSK study site, Charlotte NC 28210; GSK study site, Salisbury NC 28144.
- Drive from Columbia: Charlotte is about 90 miles north, so roughly an hour and a half on I-77.
- The run in is the real gate. A good fortnight can screen you out.

For the first time, a study here is aimed at the pain rather than at the bowel habit.
It Is Diagnosed By What Is There, Not By What Is Missing
Many people are told this is what is left when every test comes back clear. However, that is out of date. It is diagnosed positively, using the Rome criteria and the absence of alarm features. So a doctor should be able to name it rather than shrug at it.
Your Type Decides Everything
There are four types, set by what your stool looks like on the days it is abnormal. Constipation type, diarrhoea type, mixed type and undecided. Notably, the drugs work in opposite directions, so the wrong type makes a drug useless. Also, the study on this page takes only the diarrhoea and mixed types.
Three Tests Worth Asking For By Name
Faecal calprotectin rules out inflammatory bowel disease. A tTG-IgA with a total IgA rules out celiac disease, and you must still be eating gluten when it is taken. Finally, a TSH checks your thyroid. So those three are the sensible starting set.
You Probably Do Not Need a Colonoscopy
If you are under 45, have classic symptoms, no alarm features and normal results on those tests, a camera test is usually not needed. Meanwhile, alarm features do change that. Those are bleeding, weight loss, anaemia, symptoms that wake you at night, onset at 50 or over, or a family history.
The Low FODMAP Diet Has Three Phases, Not One
First you cut the trigger foods for two to six weeks. Then you add them back one at a time over six to ten weeks. Finally you settle on a personal version you keep for good. However, most people are handed phase one and never told about phases two and three, which is why it feels like a life sentence.
A Simpler Version Works Nearly as Well
Researchers at Michigan tested a less restrictive version of the same diet. Fewer people dropped out, because it asked less of them. As Shanti Eswaran put it, nobody wants to live like that. So it is worth asking a dietitian about the simplified version rather than the full one.
What the Drugs Actually Do
For the diarrhoea type, options slow things down or calm the gut. For the constipation type, they draw water in or speed things up. Meanwhile, the mixed type has no approved drug of its own at all. In fact, that gap is part of why the study on this page matters.
Camlipixant: Blocking the Pain Signal Itself
This drug blocks a receptor called P2X3, which sits on nerves that carry pain signals. The same family is already used for a stubborn cough, so it is not untested in people. So the question here is whether turning down that signal reduces belly pain. Notably, that is a different target from every approved drug for this condition.
Talking Therapies Are Physical Treatments Here
Gut directed hypnotherapy and gut focused CBT work on the nerve pathway between the brain and the gut. So they are not about being told the pain is in your head. As Laurie Keefer argues, the bar for offering them should be much lower than it is. Also, several are now delivered through apps.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome Help Near You
Start with a gastroenterologist or a dietitian who knows the FODMAP phases. Ask for a faecal calprotectin, a celiac blood test and a TSH. Also, ask which type you are, in writing. Generally, your own doctor can order all three tests.

What to Expect in an Irritable Bowel Study
New to studies? Here is how one works, step by step.
01
Prescreening
First comes a short phone call or online form. Also, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The staff check whether you might fit. Then they tell you what is open.
02
Screening Visit
Next the clinic runs the tests that decide it, which usually means blood work. Also, they go through the consent form line by line, and you can bring somebody with you.
03
Treatment Period
Then the study begins. So you take the study drug or the placebo on the agreed schedule. Meanwhile, your own doctor keeps managing everything else.
04
Follow-Up
Finally, there is a check in period at the end. Also, your own doctor gets the results, and you can stop at any point without affecting your care.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome Trial FAQs
Real answers about irritable bowel studies near Columbia SC.
Is there a study for this near Columbia?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Nothing is recruiting in Columbia, West Columbia, Lexington, Irmo, Cayce, Sumter or Orangeburg. However, one study runs in Charlotte about 90 miles north, and it is aimed at the pain rather than at how often you go. Notably, it takes only the diarrhoea type and the mixed type.
Which type of IBS do I have?
It is set by what your stool looks like on the days it is abnormal. There are four types, which are constipation, diarrhoea, mixed and undecided. Notably, the study here takes only the diarrhoea type and the mixed type. So ask your doctor to write your type down, because the drugs work in opposite directions.
Will I get a dummy?
Yes, that is possible in this study, and the split is not published. Several dose levels are compared against a dummy at the same time. So ask the clinic what your actual odds are before you agree to anything. Also, ask what happens at the end if you were on the dummy.
Do I need a colonoscopy to be sure?
Often not, and that surprises people. If you are under 45, have classic symptoms, no alarm features and normal blood and stool tests, a camera test usually adds nothing. However, alarm features change that completely. Those are bleeding, weight loss, anaemia, symptoms that wake you at night, or onset at 50 or over.
What tests should I ask for by name?
Three of them. A faecal calprotectin, which rules out inflammatory bowel disease. A tTG-IgA with a total IgA, which rules out celiac disease. Finally, a TSH for your thyroid. Notably, you must still be eating gluten when the celiac test is taken.
Is the low FODMAP diet meant to be permanent?
No, and this is the single most common mistake. It has three phases, which are cutting foods out, adding them back one at a time, then settling on a personal version. However, most people are handed phase one and never told about the other two. So ask a dietitian about the reintroduction phase specifically.
Is this all in my head?
No. It is a real disorder of how the gut and the brain talk to each other. The nerves carrying signals from the gut are genuinely oversensitive, which is what this study targets. Also, gut directed hypnotherapy and gut focused CBT work on that same pathway. So they are physical treatments rather than a suggestion that you are imagining it.
Why would anxiety stop me joining?
Because the study screens with a short questionnaire and scores above 10 rule you out. That is about keeping the pain measurements clean rather than a judgement about you. However, it does exclude a lot of people who would otherwise fit. So it is worth asking about early rather than at the end.
Does it cost anything to check?
No. There is no cost, and no insurance is needed. Tether is a nonprofit list, so we do not run studies and we are not paid to send you anywhere. Also, checking never enrolls anyone in anything. You would always call the clinic yourself.
Where can I get help near Columbia SC?
Prisma Health and Lexington Medical Center both run digestive services across the Midlands. Also, ask for a gastroenterologist, and ask whether a dietitian who knows the FODMAP phases is available. Generally, your own doctor can order the three screening tests. Meanwhile, if nobody has written down which type you are, ask for that at your next visit.

Study details and per-site recruiting status verified against ClinicalTrials.gov on August 16, 2026. A state level search on this condition in North Carolina returned nothing at all, while the study listed here had two recruiting North Carolina sites; it was found only by looking it up directly. How the study drug is taken is not published on the public record. Study availability and criteria change; the research clinic confirms everything before you enroll.
